# 57% of Enterprises Are Already Running AI Agents on Their Data. Only 8% Trust That Data Is Ready.

> The Modern Data Company's newest survey shows most enterprises are already piloting or running AI agents in production, but almost none trust the data underneath them.

The Modern Data Company released interim findings from its third annual Modern Data Survey on August 19, over 540 enterprise data leaders and practitioners across 66 countries, and the headline number isn't the adoption rate. It's the [trust rate](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20260819494251/en/AI-Agents-Are-Advancing-Faster-Than-Enterprise-Data-Is-Ready-for-Them). 57.3% of enterprises are already piloting or running AI agents in data and analytics workflows. Only 8.4% say the data feeding those systems is actually trustworthy enough for production.

## The adoption number everyone already knew

23.5% of surveyed organizations already have AI agents in production. Another 33.8% are piloting. Only 4% have no plans at all. None of that is surprising anymore. What's more useful is what the same survey found when it asked whether the data underneath those agents deserves the confidence being placed in it.

## The trust number that should worry you more

Even among companies that already have agents live in production, only 21.7% say they're very confident their data is trustworthy enough to support it. Read that twice. Roughly three in four organizations running AI agents on real production systems aren't confident in the data those agents depend on. "In production" turns out to measure whether something got deployed, not whether it should have been.

## Where the gap actually comes from

The survey's barrier data points at a specific cause. 75.9% cite data quality and trust as a barrier to production, 63.5% cite missing context or lineage, and 61.7% cite security concerns. Underneath that, 60.9% of leaders say a reliable business context layer, the layer that gives an agent the surrounding meaning to interpret data correctly, is necessary for AI agents to work well. Only 16.0% have actually designed and engineered that layer as a real product. A quarter have no formal context layer at all. Leaders know what's missing. Most haven't built it yet.

## The governance version of the same problem

The same pattern shows up in governance. 65.1% of leaders say AI decisions need to be explainable, traceable, and defensible under scrutiny. Only 39% maintain an audit trail or a decision-to-data link, the actual evidence that would let them defend a decision if asked. Just 10% maintain both. The standard everyone agrees on and the proof most companies could actually produce are two very different things.

## What to do about it

- Audit whether your production agents run on data your own team is genuinely confident in, not just data that's technically wired up and flowing.
- Treat the business context layer as a product with a named owner, not a byproduct of whatever your data pipeline happens to produce.
- Build the audit trail and the decision-to-data link before a regulator, auditor, or customer asks for one, not after.

## Where TrueHorizon fits

This is exactly the layer we build before we build the agent. **That's not a checklist we're learning on your project.** It's the expertise we bring to it. An agent is only as trustworthy as the data and context underneath it, and the survey's own numbers show that's exactly where most enterprise AI programs are furthest behind.
